Undercut and Undermined

Discussion and comment on healthcare delivery in police custody in the The Doctor in 2023 – Undercut and undermined. Interesting to note the Independent Office for Police Conduct identified 24 deaths in or following police custody, an increase of 13 from 2021/22, and the highest figure since 2017/18 – Annual deaths during or following police contact report – 2022/23 | Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Difficult to separate this from Key Finding 78 in the 2016 Angiolin report which stated ‘NHS commissioning of healthcare in police custody was due to have commenced in April 2016, but was halted by the Government earlier in the year. This report strongly recommends that this policy is reinstated and implemented.’  – Annual deaths during or following police contact report – 2023/24 | Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)    It is clearly time that this recommendation is implemented as many individuals and bodies had worked hard to achieve this by 2015/16 only to have it cancelled by the then Home Secretary, Theresa May. Is it  also time to reconsider the role, function and effectiveness also of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody whose central aim is to prevent deaths in custody? – Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody (IAPDC) – Working to prevent deaths in custody.
